A new academic vacancy in the School of Engineering and Advanced Technology (SEAT), Massey University Wellington campus is available for a qualified candidate to support the development and delivery of the Multimedia Systems Engineering major of the four-year Bachelor of Engineering with honours program.

Position Overview
Massey University Wellington has an academic vacancy in the innovative area of Multimedia Systems Engineering. This area integrates computer graphics and music, human computer interaction, Internet technologies, multimedia communications and signal processing, etc., combined with elements of art and creative design aiming at applications to film, animation and computer games. The position is to support the development and delivery of the Multimedia Systems Engineering major in the Bachelor of Engineering with honours programme. Rank and salary will be appropriate to the candidate’s experience.

The vacancy requires preferably a PhD awarded in areas related to multimedia content creation and delivery, such as interdisciplinary Computer Graphics, Computer Music, Audio/Video Signal Processing, Multimedia Systems, Digital Video Art as well as extensive knowledge of multimedia content creation including images, audio, video, animation and interactive content. The position also requires good knowledge of systems for the storage and delivery of multimedia content via the internet and other means. Commercial or industrial experience and/or a portfolio of creative work is highly desirable.

Job Description

Purpose Statement
The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor in Multimedia Content Creation including Computer Graphics and/or Computer Music is required to further strengthen research and teaching in the relevant disciplines in the School of Engineering and Advanced Technology with the ultimate aim of developing an academic group of a national and international reputation for excellence.

Responsible To:
The Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor of Multimedia Content Creation will report to the Head of the School of Engineering and Advanced Technology (SEAT) on administrative matters as well as to the Multimedia Systems Engineering degree coordinator on the teaching related issues.

Key Accountability Areas Teaching
The person appointed is required to:

Assist in the development of appropriate teaching programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students (both national and international), with a particular emphasis on using advanced technologies in delivery. Promote the wellbeing of students taught in the SEAT and support their academic progress. Collaborate with colleagues from other groups at Wellington and other Massey University campuses to ensure coordination and mutual support, especially in relation to common papers. For Associate Professor/Professor, provide academic leadership in the Multimedia Content Creation disciplines and to assisting the Head of the School in ensuring the delivery of balanced, high quality academic papers and programmes.

Research
The person appointed is required to:

Display a clear commitment to the dissemination of knowledge and research leadership through scholarly research activities and publications. Further develop a research culture in the SEAT and College of Sciences in cooperation with other academic staff in the discipline. Assist in the fostering of the vision of the SEAT through the establishment of appropriate business, industry and professional contacts, as well as international academic networking. Seek to attract funding for research and consultancy projects from appropriate government bodies, industry and business sources. Supervise the research activities of graduate and undergraduate students and build a strong and respected postgraduate programme.

Administration
The person appointed is expected to:

Carry out the administrative responsibilities appropriate to the position. Participate in such committees as requested by the Head of School, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the College of Sciences, or the Vice-Chancellor.

General
The person appointed is expected to:

Participate in the collegial life and functions of the SEAT and share its objectives to advance the knowledge and practice in the fields of activity of the School. Adhere to the principles of professional conduct and service towards students, academic and allied staff colleagues and the general public. Undertake activities consistent with teaching, administration and research requirements on the level of appointment. Support the University’s policies and mechanisms for continuous quality improvement. For Associate Professor/Professor, act as the Head of the School, in their absence as an additional duty if required and after appropriate consultation. Adhere to the rules and regulations of the University and comply with the University’s obligation under the University’s Charter regarding equal employment and the Treaty of Waitangi

A central figure of the British improvisation scene for over 30 years, Steve
Beresford (Wellington, Shropshire, 1950) is a composer, musician and
arranger, and a veteran of countless bands from the Slits to the Melody
Four. Strange sambas, jittery jazz, melancholy moods and more from one of
the most consistently imaginative and creative musicians in Europe.
Co-founder and editor of both Musics and Collisions magazines, he has worked
with the likes of Derek Bailey, Evan Parker and Han Bennink and was once a
prime mover in the London Musicians Collective with David Toop. Tonight
Steve Beresford will be joined by cellist/composer Okkyung Lee and Trumpet
player Peter Evens.

“A re-enactment of a spontaneous moment that happened on the Queensboro
Bridge in November of 2007.
Thomas Dexter- visuals, Maria Chavez- sound. “
Maria Chavez is an avant-turntablist from Peru who focuses on electro
acoustic sound of vinyl and needle. She has a collection of needles from
immaculate to ruined that she calls her “pencils of sound” and a collection
of records that provide the palette. She has toured with Christiina Carter
(Charlambides, Scorses), performed with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth in her
New York City debut, and recorded with London-based laptop artist Kaffe
Matthews, with whom she will collaborate on a live sound installation in
London in the summer of 2008. In June and July 2008, she will participate in
an artist-in-residency program with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company at
the Dia Foundation’s museum in Beacon, New York. She was recently awarded
the Jerome Emerging Artist Grant from Roulette International in SOHO, NYC,
as well as a Meet the Composer grant for a Deep Listening Institute
performance at SOHO’s Emily Harvey Gallery in April.

Acclaimed composer, cellist, and singer Robert Eens performs from his Obie
Award winning score for Hiroshima Maiden, a puppet/theater piece by Dan
Hurlin. Just released on the Innova label, the music features the composer
on cello and voice, Bill Ruyle on hammer dulcimer and percussion, and Jeff
Berman on vibraphone, marimba, lap dulcimer and percussion.
