Vacancy in Sonic Arts at the New Zealand School of Music

LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER IN ELECTRONIC MUSIC/SONIC ARTS
http://vacancies.vuw.ac.nz/positiondetail.asp?p=4435

The New Zealand School of Music, a joint venture of Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington, seeks applicants for an appointment as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Electronic Music/Sonic Arts. The position will be based at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city.

There is a long tradition of Sonic Arts at the NZSM. The School houses the Lilburn Electroacoustic Music Studios, which comprise a digital audio lab, a live electronics studio, and two studios for fixed media work. The Sonic Arts programme provides a comprehensive education in Sonic Arts, including electroacoustic composition, electronic performance, sound installations, multimedia and the history and theory of electroacoustic music. Other areas of strength within the School include composition, jazz and classical performance, musicology, ethnomusicology and music therapy. A recent expansion of offerings in areas such as music technology and film music studies highlights a new engagement with contemporary musical practice and music of the recent past.

The field of expertise required for this position is grounded in creative and/or performative practice, with a strong theoretical knowledge of music technology. Additionally, evidence of a background in critical, theoretical and/or historical scholarship, an interdisciplinary approach reflecting the multiple facets of musical practice in contemporary culture, and an ability to bridge boundaries between academic study and creative practice, would be considered advantages.

The successful candidate will have excellent postgraduate qualifications in the appropriate area(s) of expertise, teaching experience at university level, and evidence of the ability to maintain a profile of international distinction in creative practice and scholarly research. Responsibilities will include teaching and supervision at undergraduate and graduate level (and in particular, a course in electronic performance / live electronics) and contributing to the general administration of the School. The appointment will commence on 1 February 2009
