Postgraduate Symposium for Creativity in the Sonic Arts – Wednesday 6th – Thursday 7th May 2009 

Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre, De Montfort University, Leicester, United Kingdom 
 
We would like to invite you to take part in the 2009 Sound, Sight, Space and Play (SSSP) 
symposium for creativity in the sonic arts, organised by postgraduate students of the Music 
Technology and Innovation Research Centre (MTIRC) in association with Centre for 
Excellence in Performance Arts (CEPA). The ideals of this event are to stimulate co- 
operation and inspiration between postgraduate students, across institutional boundaries, 
leading to new perspectives on current works and research. We encourage submission of 
papers, on both completed and progressing research, for presentation over the course of the 
event. Limited Installation spaces and concert slots are also available. Bursaries available. 
 
Event Topics

We invite paper submissions on topics related to creativity in the sonic arts including, but not 
restricted too: 
• Sound Diffusion 
• Multi Channel Approaches to Composition and Sound Projection 
• Installations 
• Interactivity 
• Audio-Visuals and Multimedia 
• Electronics and Circuit Bending 
• Performance Practice 
• Theoretical Implications of the above 
 
Guidelines for Submission of Papers and Works 
 
Papers: The duration of each presentation will be 20 minutes followed by a 10-minute formal 
question period. Between sessions there will be breaks for informal questions and 
discussion. We offer the possibility of online publication for papers on a voluntary basis. You 
will receive more information about the publication after acceptance of the submission. 
Works: At the end of each day there will be a concert displaying works related to the day’s 
presentations. Technical specifications and requirements for works should be submitted 
through the online application form and/or included with the physical media. 
General: All submissions will be subject to a double-blind peer-review procedure conducted 
by PhD students or post docs from different institutions representing the various sub- 
disciplines of sonic arts and related fields. Abstract and program notes should be submitted 
through the online application form (or as a Word document) and must not exceed 300 words 
in length including headings and references. Physical media (e.g. CD’s/DVD’s) should be 
sent via post. Multimedia support will be provided for talks and performances in the form of 
video projector, CD and DVD player and multi speaker diffusion system. 
Deadline: The deadline for abstract submissions is 1st February 2009. The panel will 
discuss applications and respond in the first week of March. A detailed timetable can be

International Gaudeamus Composition Competition 2009

Dear composers,
 
We would like to draw your attention to the fact that the deadline of 16 January 2009 (postmark) for sending in works for The International Gaudeamus Composition Competition 2009 is approaching. The Next International Gaudeamus Music Week will be held in Amsterdam September 7-13 presented for the second time by Music Center the Netherlands, the new sector institute for music.
Please distribute this information also to anyone you might think is interested in participating this composition competition for composers who are born after September 6, 1978. They may enter works by using the entry form on www.musicweek.nl .We would prefer to receive the entry form, score (PDF) and recording MP3 digitally at musicweek @ mcn.nl. Works may have already been performed, but they must have been composed not more than three (3) years ago. An international selection committee consisting of Julia Wolfe (USA), Huba de Graaff (the Netherlands) and Akira Nishimura (Japan) will select the works competing for the Gaudeamus Prize. After the performance of the selected compositions during the Music Week 2009, the selection committee will award this prize. This Gaudeamus Prize consists of € 4.550,- as a commission for a new composition that will be premiered during the International Gaudeamus Music Week the following year, 2010. 

Works can be entered into the following categories with a maximum of 1 work per category and 3 works in total.
 A – ORCHESTRA:
Orchestral compositions for the Holland Symfonia Orchestra with a maximum of instruments as specified: 
strings: 12.10.8.6.5., wood: 3.3.3.3., brass: 4.3.3.1., 1 timp., 3 perc., 1 harp., 1pno/celesta

B – CHAMBER MUSIC:
In theory, everything is possible in this category, within the limits of solo instruments to ensembles consisting of maximally 16 instruments; with or without electronics, video, etc.; written for specific performers or for any musician /ensemble. 
Also choir compositions with a maximum of voices: 2 sopr., 2 mezzo., 2 alt., 2 ten., 2 bas. 

C- ELECTRONIC MUSIC:
Electronic music meaning tape compositions, music for instruments and electronics, music for live controlled electronic music, or sound installations.

The entry fee is 25 Euro for each work

The Annual New Music Festival held at Cal State Fullerton brings together world renowned composers and performers of new music to collaborate and enrich the experiences of audiences drawn from throughout Southern California during a four-day festival environment featuring concerts, an electroacoustic listening room, lectures, panel discussions, masterclasses and workshops. Each year the festival focuses on a different theme or issue concerning “voice” in contemporary music, from women in new music, to multi-media, to issues of inclusive voices in new music. Past festivals have featured: So Percussion, Martin Bresnick, Lisa Moore, Miya Masaoka, Meredith Monk, Ethel, Zeitgeist, Pamela Z, Tania Leon, Pauline Oliveros, Joan Tower and eighth blackbird. 

The 8th “Annual New Music Festival announces the 1st Annual Call for Proposals for: Papers, Lecture/ Demonstrations and Lecture/Performances. Length of proposed paper, lecture/demonstrations or lecture/performancework: 15 minutes. This year’s festival focuses on the theme of the Composer-Performer with guests Paul Dresher Ensemble, electroacoustic composer/flutists Anne LaBerge and Jane Rigler, and creative musician, composer Nicole Mitchell with our Jazz Ensembles in residence. Proposals focusing on themes of: Composer-Performer, Electroacoustic Music, Women in Music, Improvisation in New Music, Interface of Jazz and New Music are welcome.

For Lecture/Demonstrations: Please submit proposed abstract (150 words), bio(s), recording of proposed demonstration/performance and technical requirements. Please submit proposed CD recording of your proposed work, or a link to upload recording of your proposed work.

The International Women’s Electroacoustic Listening Room Project features daylong playback of works by women in electroacoustic music, plus live electroacoustic performances, live lecture-demonstrations of electroacoustic music and lecture/panel/discussions on new music. This year the Women’s Electroacoustic Listening Room focuses on the theme of the Composer-Performer with guest electroacoustic composer/flutists Anne LaBerge and Jane Rigler in residence. CALL FOR ELECTROACOUSTIC WORKS BY WOMEN COMPOSERS

This year’s 8th Annual New Music Festival focuses on “The Composer-Performer”. In Celebration of the Composer-Performer in the 21st Century features our guest composer/performers in residence: The Paul Dresher Ensemble, Jane Rigler, composer/flutist/electronics, Anne LaBerge, composer/flutist/electronics, and CSUF faculty composer Pamela Madsen, composer/piano/voice/electronics and other guests composer-performers and jazz artists. The International Women’s Electroacoustic Listening Room Project (WEALR), is curated by festival director, Pamela Madsen.WEALR Project features daylong playback of works by women in electroacoustic music. The WEALR Collection has traveled throughout the United States, Canada and Europe and has been featured at major festivals and centers on new music throughout the world, often in areas where works of women composers are not heard. The project is now the focus of a research study and archival recording project on women in electroacoustic music. This year the Women’s Electroacoustic Listening Room focuses on the theme of The Composer-Peformer and will feature the live performance of electroacoustic composer/performers Jane Rigler and Anne LaBerge.
